Ideally, coverage for theft should be included in your motorcycle insurance in California. Motorcycles are an attractive target for thieves, so the possibility is ever-present. But doing everything you can to secure your ride may prevent the heartache of losing it. Here are some handy hints for reducing the risk of motorcycle theft.

-	Make your bike inconspicuous. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent theft. When possible, store your motorcycle inside. In a garage preferably, but an outdoor shed will do if you don’t have one. At the very least, put a cover over it.

-	Chain your bike up. Chains designed specifically to prevent motorcycle theft are readily available. Thread the chain through the motorcycle’s frame (this is the strongest part of the bike) and wrap it around a fixed object such as a signpost or parking meter.

-	Get a motorcycle lock. There are several types of locks that can be attached to different parts of the bike to stop it from moving. Disk locks, wheel locks and U-locks can all make your motorcycle more secure.

-	Use your fork lock. Your motorcycle should have a fork lock. Locking your forks prevents the front end from turning, so any would-be thieves could only really push it in circles.

-	Install an alarm. A motorcycle alarm senses movement and can make a deafening noise when triggered.

Reducing the risk of your bike being stolen may qualify you for a discount on your California motorcycle insurance, so don’t forget to mention security features when arranging your policy.

The helmet is one thing that you definitely need to make sure you have when riding your motorcycle. Here is a simple guide that can help you buy the right helmet for any of your riding activities.

Type

The first thing that you need to consider when buying your helmet is the type that you actually want to buy. There are basically three types of helmets that you can purchase. The types include the half, three quarter, and full face helmets. Each one is substantially different from the others.

The half helmet only covers the top half of your head for the most part. This type of helmet provides a great deal of comfort and ventilation, but offers the least amount of protection.

The three quarter helmet provides more protection than the smaller half helmet, but also provides a great deal of freedom in that your face is not completely covered. This allows for more ventilation than the full face version.

The full face helmet provides the most protection for the rider because it completely covers the rider’s head. The downfall to this is the fact that there is less ventilation, which is why this type of helmet usually comes with vents in the front and in the rear.

Size

The next thing that you need to consider when purchasing a new helmet is the size. In order for it to fit properly, you have to purchase the right size for your head. You can easily figure out your size by measuring your head with a soft measuring tape.

Take the measuring tape and measure the circumference of your head, or the entire way around your head, just above your eyebrows. Record this measurement and use it when viewing sizing charts for the helmet that you are thinking about buying. This will help you get the right size when ordering.

Brand

If you have a particular brand of helmet that you prefer, then you can narrow your search down to include only the helmets that are that particular brand. Some brands are more expensive than others, so you’ll have to decide if the brand you prefer has helmets available that are within your price range.

Style

Next, decide what color you want your helmet to be or choose a particular design that you think will look good with your motorcycle. Many riders try to match up the colors and style of their helmet with the color scheme of their motorcycle. When you do the same, you’ll have a great looking helmet that helps complete your entire biker wardrobe.

Have you been thinking about buying a new wallet but simply don’t want to fork out the money to pay for a new one? Here is a simple guide that will teach you how to make your own leather wallet.

1. Materials

If you’re lucky enough to have the right materials laying around the house, then you can save on the cost of buying material for your wallet. Perhaps you’re an avid crafter who loves sewing and has a variety of materials laying around in your sewing room. If you have some leather material and an assortment of other cloth materials, then you’re in luck.

You can also purchase the materials that you need for fairly cheap at your local crafting store, so this is always an option if you simply don’t have enough material at home.

What you’ll need is about a 1 square foot piece of leather, and another 1 square foot piece of another material like a polyester or a similar material. The polyester piece of material will be used to make the cloth dividers inside the wallet.

2. Cutting Out The Pieces

Once you have the materials that you need to make your wallet, then you’ll want to cut the pieces to suit so that you can so them together. We’re going to make a tri-fold wallet so you’ll want to make each of the pieces roughly 4 inches wide by 9 inches long. Cut two leather pieces and two cloth pieces according to those measurements.

3. Lay Out The Material

Once you have the pieces all cut out and exactly the same size, then it’s time to lay them out so you can sew them together.

First, take one piece of leather and lay it out flat.

Next, take a piece of the cloth material and lay it directly on top of the leather material, and then lay the other piece of cloth material on top of that.

Finally, lay the remaining piece of leather material on top of the other three pieces so that you essentially have four pieces of material sandwiched together. Remember, all pieces should be the exact same size so trim any excess material that needs to be trimmed in order to make them all the exact same size.

4. Sew It All Together

When you have all of the material pieces properly lined up, then it’s time to sew them all together. Remember, you’re only going to be sewing three sides together because you want to leave one of the long edges open. This is where you will be able to put things into the compartments of the wallet.

You’ll need a fairly tough needle and some thick thread to sew the materials together. Because the materials can be quite thick when they are stacked together, it may be difficult to sew all of them together at once. Instead, consider sewing two together at a time, adding the others once you are completed.

Start the needle and thread in one corner of the material on a short side of the pieces. Work your way down the side of the material, securely sewing the pieces together while making sure that they remain aligned. When the side is complete, round the corner and then sew the long side of the wallet materials together. By this time you will two sides sewn together, a short side and a long side. Round the final corner and sew the remaining short side together. You will have the three sides sewn together at this point.

If you opted to sew one or two pieces together at a time to make it easier, then you will have to repeat the steps above with the other remaining pieces. Remember to sew them in the proper order which is leather piece, cloth piece, cloth piece, leather piece. When you’re finished, you will have made your very own leather wallet.

Motocross boots are the most important gear that is needed for this type of sport. The helmet is just a close second in importance. You can get away with not wearing a helmet but you will soon give up without boots. They protect the rider from rocks and other debris that are dislodged by the tires of the rider before you. It also protects the rider’s legs from being crushed by a fallen machine.

Motocross boots has very sturdy toes that protect the rider’s toes from being crushed. There are also steel shanks and the heel regions are formed particularly to fit the heel so that the rider is protected from twisting his ankles and when a bike falls over him. The boots are also heat insulated so that the rider’s legs and feet are protected from burns due to the exhaust tube or engine casing.

The bone of your shins, called the tibia, is very vulnerable to breaks when riding motocross bikes. Especially the bikes of nowadays which are more powerful and the tires which have more traction, they could cause big stones to be thrown back at you. You should protect your feet and legs from injuries because they are essential to riding. Aside from protection, your boots should also be comfortable. They should allow your feet to breathe.

Motocross boots are different from utility ones yet offer the same amount of protection if not more. Motocross boots are made from lightweight materials and should cost not more than five hundred dollars. They should have better-quality buckles that are padded from their steel inserts. Certain parts should be replaceable so that the owner doesn’t have to get a new one just to replace worn straps or buckles. Look for the type that uses the newest technology such as a system of dual stage pivot or an interior with memory cell foam. Memory cell foam reverts back to its original shape as if it has a memory. Such technology can enhance the level of performance of any rider to the highest degree.

There is also one type of design wherein the weight is lessened at the lower part but there is maximum flexibility at the upper portion. They also developed an aerodynamic profile to minimize air drag. Some models have an inner portion that affords support for the feet and enhances safety. Of course, it follows that the more superior the features, the higher the price.

An electric scooter uses no gas, but will use an electric charge to move about the home or the store. The electric charge is held in a battery. The scooter is plugged in as needed, for a few hours, to recharge the battery. No special electric outlets are needed to charge the scooter or for continued use of the battery charger in the home.

The Electric Scooter Battery
The battery is a small piece of equipment you will charge weekly. The more you use the scooter, the more often you will be required to charge the scooter. The chargeable scooter battery is one you will find easy to understand. Most all scooters are available with a charging system that will display when the charge is full, and when the charge is low so you are never left stranded with a dead battery.

When charging the battery ‘be’ sure to charge it until the light says the charge is full. Charging the battery half way, or only partially is going to lessen the life of the battery. Avoid charging the battery that is not empty. If you must take the scooter for a short ride to use more of the battery life, so you are then left with an empty battery, or at least almost empty battery.

Another feature about the scooter battery is that when it is low, when it is empty be sure to charge it again right away. The battery that sits empty for long periods will be difficult to charge again after sitting for a long time. Think about your cordless phone, you must charge it 15 hours when it is empty. The same will apply for your scooter chair if you leave it empty for a long time. It will require charging for a longer amount of time. When it is empty, recharge it, and the process will be faster.

Avoid adding or putting water on the battery, the charger or the connections for the battery. Water can easily make electric outlets surge, or worse break. You want to keep the battery and the charger moisture free for as long as you

Investing in and wearing the proper safety gear can dramatically decrease your odds of suffering from a brain injury in the event of a motorcycle accident. Considering that the majority of fatal accidents involving motorcyclists are due to irreparable brain damage, it’s obvious why wearing a certified helmet that fits properly is the single most important thing you can do to keep yourself safe in a motorcycle accident. Other safety gear such as a leather jacket, long leather pants, gloves and boots can help you avoid suffering from painful abrasions known as road rash. These are some basic tips for choosing the best helmet provided by Motorcycle Cruiser magazine.

Facilities around the country put all the helmets on the market through a battery of tests to see which helmets would hold up during an accident. One of the most critical tests they run is the drop test to see if a helmet would truly protect your skull upon major impact. The Department of Transportation uses these findings to determine which helmets will be certified as safe by their standards. While the helmets that aren’t DOT certified are still available for purchase on the market, it’s in your best interest to steer clear of them.

Helmet retention is essential in keeping you safe during an accident. Retention refers to the helmets ability to remain secure on your head. If a helmet comes off when you’re in a crash, it’s not serving it’s purpose. You can check a helmet’s retention by securing the chin strap and trying to roll the helmet off of your head. If it comes off easily, you can be sure it wouldn’t stay on during an accident. Keep on searching for a helmet that can pass this test.

Comfort and sizing are two other important factors to consider when purchasing a helmet. A well-fitting helmet will snugly surround your head, cheek bones and jaw without squeezing too tight. Keep in mind that every manufacturer’s helmet will fit differently, so if the first helmet you try on doesn’t fit, don’t be discouraged. A properly fitting helmet is key for retention in an accident. If a helmet is too tight or uncomfortable, you’ll be less likely to use it every time you go out and ride. You’re better off taking the extra time to shop around for a helmet that you’ll be truly happy with and inclined to use.

Studies done by UCLA determined that one in four motorcycle riders involved in an accident suffered facial injuries. The “Annals of Emergency Medicine” found in their studies that those motorcyclists with facial injuries were almost four times as likely to have sustained brain injuries as well. Those with actual facial fractures were 6.5 times as likely to have incurred brain trauma. These findings bring evidence to the necessity of wearing a helmet with a full face shield to protect your face from damage and in turn protect your brain.

It’s definitely in your best interest to take the time to try on multiple helmets to find a DOT certified full-face helmet that is the perfect fit. Wearing the proper helmet is by far the easiest thing you can do to ensure your safety while riding a motorcycle. Since motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable in an accident, it’s important to take extra steps to protect yourself.

If you live in a climate where rain and snow are the norm during the winter months, your motorcycle probably spends most of the time in storage while you wait for more favorable riding conditions. Then at the first sign of warm weather, you pull on your leather pants and motorcycle chaps and hit the road ready to inaugurate a new riding season. However, along the way you might discover that the glimmer of sunshine was just a teaser and you find yourself riding in inclement weather. A rain shower or light snowfall doesn’t need to preempt your ride, but there are some precautions you should take to make the ride safer and more enjoyable than the ride would be if you weren’t prepared. Your motorcycle apparel will offer some protection, but there are some other precautions that you should take before your ride.

If you have never experienced being caught off guard by a sudden downpour without the benefit of a face shield, many riders will attest that those innocent little water droplets sting when they make contact with your face. In this situation, some motorcyclists will tie a bandana across their face to ward off those steely raindrops. If there is a chance that you might encounter some precipitation on your ride, plan ahead by packing a face guard for your helmet. In addition to your leather pants and motorbike gear, pack a rain slicker, gloves or gauntlets, and perhaps a sweatshirt. In a heavy rain storm you might be better off pulling over and waiting out the storm. If this is the case, you will still want to keep warm if you’re not near a place where you can go indoors. Your motorcycle apparel can provide some warmth and protection, but you don’t know how long you’ll be out so it’s better to plan ahead with some warmer clothes.

Riding in the rain is more of a discomfort than a safety issue. Still, safety is always a priority when you’re riding a motorcycle and the best safety mechanism you have when riding in any kind of weather is your common sense. Begin to apply this common sense even before you begin a ride by checking your tire pressure and the condition of your tire tread. It doesn’t need to be raining or snowing for bald tires to become a safety hazard.

When operating any vehicle in the rain or snow, always slow down and allow plenty of space between you and other commuters. This is always recommended, but even more when the roads are wet. Damp roads usually make riding conditions unpredictable. For example, gas and oil are often spilled on the road. Until these spots have been washed away by frequent rain storms, they can be as slick as dry ice. One advantage that you have over dry ice is a light foam forms over an oil spot that is visible at some distance. If you are alert you can easily avoid these spots.

When riding in snow you run the same risks of sliding as you would if you were in a car. Here again, common sense and proper riding techniques (in addition to your motorbike gear and leather pants) can keep you safe and unharmed on a slick road. If you need to stop fast, don’t apply your brakes so hard that your front or back wheel locks up. Skidding out of control is inevitable at this point. Instead, apply light, even pressure on your brakes and keep the wheels turning. This will enable you to slow down without losing control of your bike. Also, try not to brake when you round corners. Instead, keep your speed the same and shift your weight to take the corner.

Naturally, you prefer not to ride when there are hazardous road conditions. However when you are on a ride and the weather conditions change, you can still get through the ride safely by staying alert and using safe riding techniques as well as properly outfitting yourself with your motorcycle apparel.

Mountain biking is a rough and tough sport. In involves riding and negotiating tough, off-road mountain terrain. Clearly, an ordinary bike is not up to the arduous journey.

So, what are the most important features of mountain bikes?

Mountain bikes do share certain similarities with ordinary bikes but they also incorporate many features that help them adapt to rough terrain and endure extreme conditions. Modern mountain bikes have a dual suspension system to help the rider move smoothly over bumps and holes. The tires are wider and more wobbly to provide more traction and balance and could be of 26 or 29 inches. These wide tires are generally mounted on reinforced rims so as to help mountain bikes withstand the stress of bad roads.

Mountain bikes have special features that facilitate easy handling and balance. For instance, the handlebar is raised, wide and flat. This allows a more comfortable riding position for the rider. If the handlebars are too much to the front or back, there will be excessive pressure on the upper part of the body, which makes riding a painful experience. Mountain bikes are heavier than road bikes so as to ensure more balance.

It is possible to adjust the height of the saddle so that riders can easily rest a foot on the ground, if and when necessary. To ensure this, riders generally make use of a slightly smaller frame size so both their feet can touch the ground. To ensure safety and good road control, mountain bikes make use of gears and disc brakes. Riders need to adjust the position of the brakes so they get proper control of the brakes. The gear ratio of mountain bikes is much higher to facilitate steep climbs.

Recently, there have been many innovations in the technologies used in mountain bikes which enhance their speed and allow the rider better control. For instance, riders are now provided with clipless pedals so that specially designed shoes can easily connect and engage with the pedals. This ensures that the feet do not slip away from the pedals when mountain biking.

Thus, it is obvious that mountain bikes have special systems to help riders achieve better speed without losing control. To that extent, mountain bikes have come a long way and most riders look for the most sophisticated bikes so that they can ride seamlessly and smoothly on roads that are designed to test the mettle of any rider. That is why it is important to choose mountain bikes that can readily withstand the rigors of mountain terrain and deliver strength, balance and speed. Such a bike is an asset for a rider.
